Melvin Mason, affectionately known as "Cousin Mel," has long been a beloved fixture in Clovis. His connection to the city began in his youth when his cousin moved from Easton to Clovis. Summers spent visiting them deepened his fondness for the town, but it was one particular adventure that sealed his love for Clovis—riding a horse into town with his cousin, tying it up in front of the local drugstore, and soaking in the charm of the community.
Years later, Mel and his wife made Clovis their permanent home, settling at Cedar and Herndon. It was there that he befriended his neighbors, Gene and Orban Howard, who would later open Dry Creek Coffee in Old Town. His visits to the shop led him to spend more time on Pollasky Street, where he became acquainted with many local business owners, including Cora and Billy Shipley and Scott and Julie Glenn. From that moment on, Pollasky became his second home.
A musician at heart, Cousin Mel is known for storing his guitars in various Clovis establishments—On the Edge Coffee, the Tollhouse Market, and now Jeb’s—always ready to entertain customers with a song. With a quick verse from legends like Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, or Hank Williams, he brings a touch of nostalgia and joy to those around him. Ever mindful of his audience, he ensures his music is a welcome treat, saying with a grin, “I make sure I don’t annoy people.”
Whether strumming his guitar, sharing a story, or simply enjoying the company of friends, Cousin Mel is a cherished part of the Clovis community, a living reminder of the town’s rich history and vibrant spirit.
