Mark Gardner

Mark Gardner was born in Los Angeles in 1962, attended Clovis High School where he had a stellar baseball career and went on to pitch at Fresno City College and Fresno State. During his time at Fresno State, Mark met Lori Romeiro, an All-American softball pitcher. Mark and Lori married and had two sons, Nicholas and Daniel.

Mark broke into the major leagues a month into the 1989 season at the age of 27 with the Montreal Expos, and enjoyed a long and successful career pitching with the Kansas City Royals, Florida Marlins and San Francisco Giants.

Lori Gardner, after a long battle with liver cancer, died in 2003. Before her death, Lori and Mark created Step to the Plate Foundation to help families of transplant recipients. They also began actively working with the California Organ Donor Network and Stanford Medical Center to raise awareness of the need for organ and tissue donors. Today, the Gardner family remains active in Donate Life America, a nonprofit alliance of national organizations and 47 state-based organizations across the United States dedicated to educating the public and advocating for organ, eye and tissue donation.

After retiring as a player with the Giants Mark began coaching for them in 2003, becoming the bull pen coach and remaining in that position for 14 years. In 2018, with his eye for talent and great understanding of the technical aspects of pitching, Mark began a special assignment the Giants to evaluate pitchers.

In 2008 Mark married Kerry Steitz. They supported the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation and he was involved with California's Responsible Fatherhood Campaign alomg with other community work.
