
Franklin Antonio (1953–2022) was a pioneering engineer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, best known as a co-founder of Qualcomm. Antonio was a Clovis native who grew up as an only child. He graduated from Clovis High in 1970. He earned his degree in Applied Physics and Information Science from UC San Diego in 1974. Antonio played a key role in developing Qualcomm’s OmniTRACS satellite communication system and advancing CDMA technology, holding 378 patents worldwide.
A dedicated philanthropist, he donated $30 million to UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering, leading to the creation of Franklin Antonio Hall. He also supported the SETI Institute and other scientific research initiatives.
Antonio had deep ties to California, including the Central Valley, where his impact on technology and innovation continues to be felt. His legacy endures through his contributions to wireless communication, education, and scientific exploration.
