In 1995, Curtis joined the United States Navy where he served 4 years. Upon leaving The Navy he joined the Local Emergency Medical Service for Fresno County. In 1992 he completed Paramedic Training and joined the Specialized Trauma and Rescue Team (STAR) of American Ambulance.
In 1997 Shurtliff completed the Police Academy winning the Leadership award and Joined the Fresno Police Department. It was there that he received his first Life Saving Medal for performing CPR, saving the life of a bicyclist who suffered a sever skull fracture in and accident.
Cpl. Shurtliff joined the Clovis Police Department in November 2005. In his first two years he became the department's lead Advanced Officer for medical training and response to mental illness. He also joined the Clovis SWAT Team as well as the Department's Honor Guard Team. On January 8, 2008, during a police response to a non-breathing infant. he responded to a code three and assisted with CPR, reviving the child and receiving his second lifesaving medal.
Cpl. Shurtliff was promoted to Police Detective in the Investigation Unit and promoted to Corporal in 2016. While working with local Clovis schools, churches and scout troops he directed and coordinated events, carnivals, and meetings that educated our children about safety, self-defense and making good personal choices. He volunteered at Gettysburg Elementary school where he arrives in Police uniform and directs fitness programs with the students one hour before the start of school. His program focuses on healthy eating and exercise while having fun.
