Tony and Tina Petersen

Tony and Tina Petersen were awarded the Community Award Friends of Youth in 2012. The couple met while attending Reedley College where Tony was attending on an athletic scholarship. They married in 1951 and Tony was drafted into the US Army in 1952 where he was lucky to spend his service playing basketball. After the army Tony worked for a pharmaceutical company but in 1961 decided to return to college for a teaching degree. Tina worked at many jobs while expecting their 5th child and Tony upon graduation was hired by Clovis Unified School District. Besides teaching Tony also coached football, wrestling, baseball, and tract. In the 70's Tony was President of The Teacher's Association in CUSD and was responsible for dissolving the teacher's union which made CUSD a unique district without a teacher's union. He moved into administration and retired in 1993. In 2000 he was offered a position to teach 6th grade at Century Elementary, and Tina became his volunteer partner where she received the coveted Crystal Award for Volunteer of the year. Tony received many educational awards including CUSD's Exceptional Person of the year. The many students and parents show their appreciation for the couple by converging on Century's campus Oct 2, Tony's birthday, to pay tribute  to them for all they have done for so many Clovis families.
