Stacey Schiro received the 1998 Friend of Youth Award. Mrs Schiro was the pep and cheer advisor at Clovis High School for nine years during which time her squads brought home five national championships. They won the national first place trophy in 1997 and 1998. Stacey also accompanied her team to San Antonio, Texas for the National Cheerleaders of America Dance Competition. Being involved with youth activities takes a real commitment, and this project is a year round commitment not only for Stacey, but for the 14 girls who make up this squad. Each girl had to earn the $1,300 for the National competition trip. Stacey inspired the young women to be on "Job squads" - they washed windows, babysat, did yard work, and worked food carts at lunch time at school. Some worked part time at Clovis Academy of Gymnastics and Dance. Mrs Schiro's contribution to guiding and teaching these young high school dancers is outstanding and together, they brought national recognition to our community.
