Sidney Oliver

Sidney J Oliver was inducted into the 2000 Clovis Chamber Hall of Fame. Growing up on his family farm near Herndon and Fowler, Sidney graduated from Clovis High School in 1928. Attending college in Fresno and Berkeley he received a Master's in Entomology. Upon graduation he worked for the United States Agricultural Department but when he heard of an opening for a biology teacher at Clovis High he applied and received the position. Throughout his 32 years at Clovis High, he was recognized as a master biologist and contributed greatly to the science department. He taught anatomy, physiology and biology soon becoming the Biology Department Chairman. When the California Central Valley Science Fair began in the 1950s, Sidney spent hours helping his Science Club Students with their projects. Clovis High benefited from his dedication when they won first place in three of the first four years of the fair and was presented a Perpetual Science Fair Trophy which it still possesses. Sidney also became a Realtor building a commercial building now the home of Luna's Pizzeria. In 1995 he was involved in a fatal traffic accident on Herndon. Due to this event part of Herndon was changed, and a tree memorial and plaque were established in the Clovis Veterans' Memorial Park in his honor.
