Lucretia Smith McMurtry

Lucretia was born in 1889 in Selma where she completed most of her schooling there until her family moved to Clovis and she graduated from Clovis high in 1909. She used to drive her 4 younger sisters in a horse and buggy from their ranch near Academy to school. She married M.S. McMurtry in 1911 who was Clovis' only Doctor for many years.

She was one of the Founders of the Clovis Women's Club which in 1914 helped establish the first Annual Festival Day and Parade which would evolve into the Clovis Rodeo. She held the position of President for this club a number of times through the years. She was Grand Marshall of the Clovis Rodeo parade in 1982.

She was involved with the Clovis Garden Club and also enjoyed the Clovis Art Guild where her great talent of the arts were appreciated. Her pen and ink art work has been widely seen and even graces the covers of 2 books. She loved to travel and has done so extensively throughout the world. She was considered one of the original "liberated women" as she says she did most of her traveling without her husband who didn't care much for travel.

Lucretia McMurtry passed away in 1985 at 95 years young.
