Clovis Fire Department Captain Larry Cottom was named the 1990 Citizen of the Year. Cottom worked with the Clovis Fire Department beginning in 1972, when he served as a reserve. He was promoted to fire engineer in 1977 and became a captain in 1988 where he headed the department’s heavy rescue crew. He was also named the state firefighter of the year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cottom and six other Clovis firefighters were called to Interstate 880 in Oakland after the 1988 earthquake. Cottom and his men worked on the extrication effort and Cottom was called on as the heavy rescue expert at the scene. Cottom served on the committee for the Clovis Diamond Jubilee Celebration, was a Boy Scout merit badge counselor for firemanship and emergency preparedness, was a member of the Sierra Chapter of the Model A Ford Club and organized the Fireman’s Muster in Clovis, which raised funds for Clovis senior citizens.
