George Middleton was inducted into the 2000 Clovis Chamber Hall of Fame. George had 2 loves, teaching and flying. His love of flying started when he was 16 and learned to fly an American Eagle from a cow pasture. After High School he joined the Army Air Corp. After four years he returned to attend college and in 1949 he and his wife moved to Clovis where he became the agriculture teacher at Clovis High School. In 1951 his team won the State High School Rodeo championship. In 1952 the Air Force recalled a large number of pilots including George and after five years of service, he returned joining the Fresno Air National Guard. He became the commander of the 144th Fighter Interceptor Group and an on-call pilot for Governor Pat Brown. In 1971 he retired as a Brigadier General. George served over 29 years in various positions in the Central Valley and Clovis YMCA and retired from Clovis High School where he was a counselor. For years George ran the chains for the Clovis High football games and drove their fire engine for the pep girls. He drove his pick up truck and trailer for floats in the rodeo parade and was an announcer for a number of years.
