Lloyd Merriman

Lloyd Merriman was a Clovis icon who became the second player from Clovis High to play Major League Baseball.  Mr. Merriman enjoyed a stellar athletic career at Clovis High as a four-sport star in football, basketball, baseball and track.

As was the case for many young men at that time, Mr. Merriman served his country immediately following his completion of high school. He trained as a fighter pilot during World War II. After his tour of duty was complete, he enrolled at Stanford University where he played football and baseball. After he received pre-season football All American honors in 1946, he set football aside to concentrate on his pursuit of a career in professional baseball. As an outfielder in the Cincinnati Reds organization, Mr. Merriman reached the Big Leagues in 1949.

Mr. Merriman's baseball career was put on hold in 1952 when he was called to active duty to serve as a jet fighter pilot in the Korean War. He flew alongside baseball Hall-of -Fame player Ted Williams and future astronaut John Glenn. After Mr. Merriman returned from the conflict, he resumed his career in the major leagues playing for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs.

Upon the completion of his career in the major leagues, Mr. Merriman returned to his hometown to serve Clovis and many capacities. He served as a school board member, and he also served on the Clovis Memorial District Board. He was active in the Clovis Rodeo Association, and he coached Pop Warner football. Mr. Merriman remained involved in the Clovis community his entire life. He will always be known as a humble man who never forgot the community where he grew up.

Another passion of Mr. Merriman’s was his active training of reigned cow horses. Lloyd competed in Reigned Cow Horse Association competitions around the United States. In 1968 Mr. Merriman was voted into the Fresno County athletic Hall of Fame. In 1993 Clovis High School dedicated its baseball field in his name. In 2007 Lloyd Merriman was inducted into the Clovis High Baseball Hall of Fame.
