Herman "Smitty" Smith

Herman "Smitty" Smith was born in New Mexico before it became a state. The family moved to Oklahoma and in 1929 they relocated to California.

In 1944 he bought out Merriman's store in Clovis. It was groceries and general merchandise. He was honest and a hard worker and did it all from delivering groceries, sweeping the warehouse and washing windows. He was always kind and helpful to others and was known to tell great stories!

Smitty was secretary of the Clovis Rodeo Association Board of directors for 15 years and Chairman of the Queen Contest for 8 years.

In 1993 he was selected as the Grand Marshal of the Clovis Rodeo Parade.

In the 1950's he and his wife established Smith Realty in Clovis and had that for the next 26 years. He became a charter member of the Clovis Rotary and was active in the Clovis Chamber of Commerce, The Fresno County Sheriff's Posse, The Fresno County Horseowners Association and The Fresno Realty Board.
