“Doc” Buchanan was inducted into the Clovis Hall of Fame in 1976 for his contribution in Education for the young people of Clovis. Doc was also inducted as Citizen of the Year in 1991. After graduating from Denver University, he joined the Merchant Marine and the Army Medical Corps. When discharged he took a job in Colorado as a teacher and developed a passion for education. Doc Buchanan earned his PhD in Education from the University of California Berkeley and soon moved to Clovis in 1957 as Superintendent of the Jefferson Union School District. Three years later he was named Superintendent of the new Clovis Unified School District and served as the Superintendent till 1990. During his time, he shaped the district and established a tradition of excellence for Clovis Schools by focusing on core values and people. Even after his retirement, he continued his involvement supporting the School District. Doc Buchanan had a passion for youth sports and himself coached in the Clovis Boys League for 12 years. Through his work, Doc Buchanan did much to shape the community of Clovis and its tradition of excellence.
