In 1912, Carl Merriman went to work for Mr. Gibson who had a general store at 5th and Pollasky. The war came along, and he joined the Navy where became a baker. When he returned home, he opened a bakery. In 1922, he bought the general store from Mr. Gibson and ran the store for 20 years. In the 30’s he brought butane to Clovis to help with heating and cooking. After selling his store in the early 40’s he bought 1,500 acres in and around Meadow Lake where he grew apples. Carl helped establish the Clovis Rodeo Association, served as its president and was the Grand Marshall of the rodeo parade. He served as a Clovis high School Board Trustee and helped form and served on the Board of the Clovis Veterans Memorial District. He was a past commander of the American Legion and Exalted Ruler of the Masonic Lodge in Clovis. The Clovis Hall of Fame inducted Mr. Merriman as a Founder in 1995.
